Profile
of John Goodman, Proud Member of the Clown Alley of London
John
started his clowning career in 1986 by answering an ad in a Florida
paper. He was in the Sunshine State because of health and was looking
for a way to fill time. John, now 76, has had 16 years of "tramping"
around! "J.R." is the name of this tramp clown
- derived from his own initials for John Raymond (he says John Righteous).
Since every "Tom, Dick and Harry" was called "John"
years ago, this was how John, even then, stood out from the crowd.
John has 1 daughter, 3 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
He also has a very special life partner, Joan, or "Josie"
as he calls her.
John learned the art of clowning by attending the Carpet Clown College
in Florida for 6 winters. He has tramped in numerous parades and
conventions in Oklahoma, Nebraska and Ontario to name a few. His
mainstay prop is an umbrella and has used many over his career.
His "boxcar" holds plaques and various other mementos
of his career including one for 2nd prize out of thousands of clowns
in a parade-ability competition. He has performed in a 3-ring circus
in Gibsonton Florida and once had the United
States F.B.I. pull a gun on him when J.R. attempted to approach
the state governor to give him a Canadian pin!

Although
mainly a parade clown, John has used his skills and knowledge to teach
others the art of clowning as well. He taught
the first clown school in London three years ago which not
only held many of the professional clowns in business around this
area, but was the seed that started the Clown Alley of London, with
many of the present members of the alley being from that class. He
has also taught clowning to the students at London's John Robarts
School as well as being an advisor for plays
at St. Mary's Catholic School.
John very much believes that there are "true clowns", those
having a clown inside, and this is why Red
Skelton is his favourite funny person as he was a true
clown as opposed to acting. |

Many
have benefitted from John's enthusiasm and love of clowning, mainly
the handicapped and anyone who is under 12 or over 55. His career
has been extended to them in countless ways. He continues to be
involved on a yearly basis with Kid's Expo.
His greatest reward in clowning is hearing laughter, especially
that coming from children! His advice to new clowns is to get into
makeup and wardrobe at least once a month.
"He
is a wealth of information on creative ideas for inexpensive props
and is willing to impart his experience and knowledge to help you
become a better clown. All you have to do is ask him!" |
